Prescription Ordering
If an item of medication has been put on a repeat list for you, you may be able to obtain a further supply of your medication without seeing the doctor, for up to six months.
To order your repeat prescription, please tick the items you require on the the right hand side of your prescription and hand it in to Reception. Alternatively, you may ask your local pharmacy to hold your repeat requests for you and they will submit them on your behalf in good time for re-ordering. You will then be able to collect your prescription directly from the pharmacy or, in some cases, they may be able to deliver it to your home. Please ask your local pharmacy for details of this service. We regret that for reasons of patient safety we are unable to accept prescription requests by telephone.
When ordering your repeat prescription, please allow at least 48 hours, excluding weekends and Bank Holidays, for your request to be processed as it takes time to prepare safely, to check and to be signed by the doctor.
Please be aware also that should you run out of medication and need a repeat supply urgently, we will not be able to provide a repeat prescription immediately on demand. This is because the doctors are likely to be consulting and we cannot inconvenience other patients by disrupting surgeries. We will do our best to help you but this may require you to come back later in the day to collect your prescription.
Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
NHS charges
Correct Dec 2018, the charges are:
- Prescription (per item): £9.15
- 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £105.90
- 3-month PPC: £29.65
If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.
- Telephone advice and order line 0300 330 1341.
- General Public - Buy or Renew a PPC On-line
In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:
- those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
- those who are age exempt
- those with certain medical conditions
